The Week In Review, August 25 - 31, 2012

Welcome to our Week In Review! Here we'll take a look at some of the great games and apps that embodied our theme this past week, and discuss what's to come in the week ahead.

This week, we here at Best Apps Market celebrated the fact that we're coming out of Summer and heading into Fall with one last week of Fun In the Sun. And for the sports-minded among you, we also noted that it's US Open Championship time! So load yourself up with these apps (if you haven't already) and get out there!

To make sure you're not going to dress for sun and get rained on instead, you'll want to download Weather HD Free, a beautiful app that doesn't just tell you what it's like outside, but shows you, with gorgeously-rendered atmospheric animations. And once you're out there looking for things to do, use Tagwhat to hear what people are saying about the events and businesses near your immediate location. And for all-purpose adventuring, you can't do without your Swiss Army Knife, which presents you with a flashlight, a ruler, a timer, a stop watch, a compass, and a bubble level... because you never know what you'll need out there, you MacGyver, you.

To divert yourself while you're soaking up the sun, keep with the US Open theme and try out Stick Tennis, which takes away the tedium of running and focuses on the return of the ball. For something less combative, you'll enjoy SummitX Snowboarding, which tests your shredding skills as you trick your way down the slopes. And for something completely different, breed and race your own horses in Derby Days; don't assume that you're limited to real life animals!

What's coming up for Best Apps Market? Next week, we're honoring the NFL by focusing on pig-related games and apps; and Labor Day's just around the corner! And don't forget to install our widgets to keep up with our daily Editor's Top AppsTop Games, and Apps of the Day! Have a great weekend! -- Keoni C.

Uber Vs The Cab Industry, Lyft App Launched For Android

Today at MobileAppCon 2012 the CEO of Uber Travis Kalanick spoke about how the UBER app has disrupted the cab industry. Travis went over the ups and downs of trying to change an industry that been the same since the 40's.  In fact since the late 40's NYC has pretty much had the same amount of taxi's even though population of NYC has skyrocketed. Uber comes in handy in places where cabs are hard to flag down on the street or it may even be dangerous to do so.. However, cities often have decades-old regulations regarding car services acting as taxis and many politicians have went after them sighting a concern about confusing riders or breaking rules.

Uber has been a help to people in need of a ride and has helped several individuals become successful by running Uber cabs. However, in the immortal words of Peter Parker, "with great power comes great responsibility".  This has held true for Uber as they have had to fight litigation from the powers that be.
Check out an excerpt of Uber's Travis Kalancik excellent presentation from MobileAppCon 2012

The Week In Review, August 18 - 24, 2012

Welcome to our Week In Review! Here we'll take a look at some of the great games and apps that embodied our theme this past week, and discuss what's to come in the week ahead.

This week, we've been all about the Great Outdoors! As Summer draws to a close, it's important to get out outside and take advantage of the great weather. Unless, of course, you live in San Francisco as we do. However, no matter where you go, we've got apps and games that you'll enjoy while you're there!

If you're going hiking, you'll want to clothe yourself in the best gear possible. But how to find that stuff? With Gear of the Day Outdoor Deals, an app that helps you locate the best deals possible for a large number of online retailers. If, however, you've managed to sustain an injury regardless of what you're wearing, First Aid - American Red Cross will help you deal with your medical issues, at least until the rescue helicopter arrives. And finally, when you do finally have to go back inside, you can relive the beauty with RealDepth Forest Free Live Wallpaper, and let the serenity soothe your soul.

And if you're stuck inside and can't get out for some reason (grounded, chained to a radiator, what have you), then we've got you covered with free-roaming games like 3D City Runner, in which you run across the tops of busses to collect hamburgers. You know, the American Dream. For something a little more stylish, take on Foxy's Ride, a futuristic platformer that has you skating and hoverboarding your way across a neon-lit landscape. And finally, if you want to eschew the streets completely, High Flyin' Free lets you enjoy the thrills of virtual skydiving as you defy gravity for points!

What's coming up for Best Apps Market? Next week, it's the U.S. Open Championships, so tune in to us to supplement the tennis action! And don't forget to install our widgets to keep up with our daily Editor's Top AppsTop Games, and Apps of the Day! Have a great weekend! -- Keoni C.

Flickr & Pandroa offer new updates.

The Flickr Android app has been around for almost a year and has received an update to be as smooth as the the iOS version. The new UI makes it easier to navigate photos and make for a better user experience. One of the biggest updates I found as a user is when the camera tab is tapped, you'll now be prompted to choose your camera or camera app of choice in order to capture the shot. The ability to add metadata and HTML information to pictures makes this iteration of Flickr for Android a better product and one that should make photo sharing on Android as fun as it is for iOS.

Pandora also had a new update to make their Android app better. This version makes it closer to the HTML 5 iOS version. A new UI and song lyrics make this version the best one yet.

Curiosity Delayed till September

Today was the day that the new game from famed game designer Peter Molyneux was supposed to be out. Well in typical Peter Molyneux style the game has been pushed back to September. The "special" thing about Molyneux's new game entitled Curiosity is that apparently the secrets of the universe are involved. Peter Molyneux classes Curiosity as an experiment rather than a game. In Curiosity you get a black cube in a white room that you can chip away at. Being a massive game players from all over the world and on many platforms get to chip away at this cube. The person who chips the last piece of the cube will have the "Ultimate Prize" revealed to them, some thing on the scale of the answer to life. Molyneux never one short of an ego, envisions gamers working together to reveal the contents of the box, but he knows some will want to get ahead. To answer this question he has included the ultimate DLC in the form of a $77,000 pick ax that can help one get ahead. That is $77,000 real money dollars! Well the game did not come out today and I'm glad, it gives me more time to raise money for the DLC. Check out the just released trailer for Curiosity.

Google Play Gift Cards

Google is finally starting to catch up with Apple. Ok maybe not, but at least they are attempting to make Google Play transactions easier. Today we see the release of a landing page that showcases the new Google Play gift cards.

http://play.google.com/about/giftcards/

One of the reasons that Apple has more traction when it come to Apps is that we are very familiar with the iTunes virtual currency and it's ability to purchase Apps. Google is trying to make Android as consumer friendly as iOS products and this is a step in the right direction. With the inclusion of Gamestop as a featured retailer it looks like this may be a way to really push Android gaming. Their are some amazing games that have been ported to Android but sales have not been that great due to what I believe is a not so user friendly purchasing process.

One case in point is Dead Trigger. Dead Trigger is a great FPS from Madfinger Games that uses the Unreal Engine, this game is great but suffered from intense pirating even though it was only 99 cents. If the process to purchase games was a little better maybe this game could have fared better. I believe with the crop of cheap and powerful tablets coming out in addition top notch game development, Android has a strong gaming future. This move by Google to create gift cards for their store and the fact they are targeting the gaming market through Gamestop will help the growth of Android gaming considerably. Check out this clip for Dead Trigger and you can see why I am excited about the future of Android gaming.

McGuckin brings with him almost a decade of mobile content marketing and user-acquisition experience at leading mobile companies.  He will be responsible for user acquisition and marketing for SGN’s catalog of cross-platform games on mobile devices, social networks, and web browsers.

“With the success of our cross-platform games, our next area of investment is focusing on building a world-class user acquisition machine,” said Colin Digiaro, COO, SGN. “Having a marketing veteran like Ruairi who understands the nuances of user acquisition in today's rapidly evolving gaming landscape adds a critical layer of depth to our management team.”

Pics Leaked Of Nikon's Android Powered Camera

This is a look at the leaked pics for Nikon's new Android Powered camera. The camera supposedly runs Gingerbread and has all the functions of a high end Android device. Not to much is actually know about this, but the word is Nikon will be making an announcement about the device this Wednesday August 22nd. I for one would just like a phone with an amazing camera, but this is an interesting step in the development in consumer cameras.

Curiosity packs expensive content

Recently, 22Cans announced that Curiosity would be hitting iOS, Android, and PC this summer, on August 22.

If you don't know what Curiosity is, it's the first project that Peter Molyneux, designer of Fable and Black & White, has worked on since leaving behind Lionhead Studios and Microsoft.
Curiosity's not your conventional game, but an experiment of sorts. Peter Molyneux classes Curiosity as an experiment rather than a game. It is simply a black cube in a white room that you can chip away at. But the cube is made up of millions of smaller black cubes, all of which need to be removed to open up the cube and reveal what’s inside. In the center of the cube is some sort of fantastic reward that's only made available to the person who made the final chip in the cube. According to Molyneux, it's something that "is so valuable, and so life-changingly important."

Molyneux envisions gamers working together to reveal the contents of the box, but he knows some will want to get ahead. So two lots of DLC will be available to aid in your cube destruction. The first is a 99 cent iron chisel that will give you 10x the power to chip away at the blocks. The second is a diamond chisel, which increases your power 100,000x. Everyone playing Curiosity will want that diamond chisel, but hardly anyone can afford it as it will cost $77,000 and there will only be one available to purchase.  Check out this video of Peter Molyneux talking about the game.

The Week In Review, August 11 - 17, 2012

Welcome to our Week In Review! Here we'll take a look at some of the great games and apps that embodied our theme this past week, and discuss what's to come in the week ahead.

Welcome to football season! It's that time again, when our thoughts turn to that crazy ovoid leather bag, and the men who toss it around. And if that wasn't enough, we've been reveling in the joy that is Shark Week! Essentially, it's been a testosterone-laden past week for use here at Best Apps Market, and we'd like to share the spoils with you, faithful audience.

In the realm of football, it's important to keep up with the activities of your favorite team. One way to do this is with Team Stream, an app that lets you receive up-to-the-minute news on the players and teams you care about. At the same time, you'll also want to know when the next scheduled game is, so install Football Schedule 2012 and never miss a match again! And if you'd rather be actively playing than idly watching, we recommend Super Touchdown, which lets you strategize the placement of your players and focus on specific skills.

On the other side of things, we've been celebrating Shark Week with Shark Dash Free, a puzzler created specifically for the Discovery Channel, in which you must figure the best way to collect fish. For something completely different, check out Sharks vs Zombies, in which you play an anthropomorphic shark wielding a gun, mowing down zombies. Yeah. Go figure. And finally, once you've grown tired of all the mayhem, you can relax with Shark Reef Live Wallpaper Free, and just watch the fishies swim around.

Gameloft's Kingdoms & Lords coming to Android

Gameloft is one of my favorite mobile game companies and has been since I first played N.O.V.A., one of the best FPS's on mobile devices. This year has been pretty big with both an excellent BatMan and Spider-Man game released during the summer. You can read about those games here.

To follow up with a huge summer that included the super cute Monster Life, Gameloft has released a new trailer for Kingdoms & Lords, a game they showed off during E3. It's currently on iOS but an Android version is on the way soon. From the looks of it, Kingdoms & Lords will be another quality Gameloft title and should appeal to fans of Game Of Thrones.

Just check out the epic trailer and it's epic music.  After you check out the trailer make sure to install some of the great Gameloft games available on Best Apps Market.

Apple Vs.Google: E-Commerce market share

Check out these charts provided by Monetate that show the growth of Android.  The growth of the total visits to E-Commerce sites like Amazon was going up and even converting better than iOS visits. Then Apple released the iPhone 4s and choked a little bit of life of the Android growth. In the charts you can see that market share has had a major increase in 2 quarters and and more people than ever are using iOS devices to shop. How can this be changed and what can Google do to compete better in the smartphone war. As more people shop on their phones Google needs to make the Android OS  more shopper friendly. Perhaps deals with Wal-Mart for scanning items and saving money with you phones. Wal-Mart has a huge network and if Google partnered with them to push smart devices to huge masses through shopping incentives we could see a major shift in the market.

Raved App is free for Android Devices

Raved announced today that its app for Android devices is now available for free . Raved is a convenient way for consumers to discover, save and share great places to eat, drink, shop and get things done – all based on trusted recommendations from friends.

Raved combines a mobile-first approach with a unique friend-powered recommendation engine and some of the best aspects of Facebook, Foursquare, Yelp and Pinterest to let users:
  • Discover great places friends recommend
  • Save favorite places to get useful info and deals on the go
  • Share places they love so their friends can love them, too
Following the successful Raved launch for iPhone and iPod touch in July, Raved has already accumulated nearly 250,000 users and their friends along with over 4.5 million “Raves” about places and services they love.

“We’ve been delighted by the great reception and rapid growth of Raved since our launch of the service on the iOS platform a few weeks ago,” said Henry Vogel, CEO of Raved. “We’re excited to further expand our coverage and offer Raved to even more consumers on their Android devices.”

Raved provides an intuitive and highly visual interface built atop aggregated data from various social graphs, content sources and a database of almost 20 million U.S. merchants. Users don’t need to find or follow anyone to get started; Raved can automatically integrate 'friends' and their 'likes', 'check-ins', and more from users’ social networks like Facebook.  Users can also discover great new places by browsing Raved 'PlaceLists' filled with recommendations from featured users, publishers and review sites. As users 'Rave' places, the app makes it easy for them to create and publish their own ‘PlaceLists’ of great places they want to explore, remember or share with friends.

Users can choose to save places just for themselves, like bookmarking a restaurant to try in the future, or they can share a recommendation publicly by simply 'Raving' it. They can also write optional 'Tips' and share more information and personal recommendations. Saving and 'Raving' places is as simple as tapping a button; there’s no need to write long reviews, determine star ratings or enter any other information. Users can also request advice from friends directly with the new “Ask for Tips” or “Get Raves” features. Users can edit their questions and easily post them to Facebook and via mobile notifications to other Raved users.

Raved also pulls in lots of rich content about places like photos, addresses, store hours, posts to Facebook, special deals and offers, and links to other useful information and services. And since memorable places are out in the world, Raved now helps make sure users have all the important information about those great places at their fingertips on their Android devices wherever and whenever they need it.

GameKlip adds a real controller to Mobile gaming

Currently one of my favorite games on Android is Dead Trigger, a great(and Free!) zombie  FPS.
I decided to stream the gameplay on game streaming site Twitch.TV

Watch BAM stream Dead Trigger on A Sony Xperia Ion

The stream went really well and I really love the game, however, one of the major issues that came up is that playing an FPS with touch screen controls is very hard. Well there may be an answer for this with the GameKlip

The GameKlip may be a  solution to the Android gaming problem. The GameKlip is made out of strong ABS plastic and easily snaps onto your DualShock3 controller, providing a solid mounting platform for your Android phone. Each GameKlip is laser cut and thermoformed to the controller and phone.

I'm looking forward to using the GameKlip on my next foray into mobile game streaming. For More info go to  http://thegameklip.com/

Temple Run installed over 100 Million times.

Temple Run®, originally released on the App Store one year ago today, has now been downloaded over 100 million times, with over 68 million on iOS and 32 million on Android devices. Free to download, Temple Run challenges players to test their reflexes as they race down ancient temple walls and along sheer cliffs to collect coins, all while jumping, running and sliding to escape the grasps of the temple dwellers and avoiding obstacles.

“We never imagined that the game we were making and loved would be so well received around the world,” said Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi Studios. “The last year has been incredible for us, and we are grateful to fans of the game. We hope to be able to provide them with more entertainment from the brand for years to come.”

Over 10 billion sessions of Temple Run have been played since August 2011, equaling a combined time of 54,000 years spent playing the game. Based on the number of downloads in the U.S., 13 percent of the U.S. population has downloaded Temple Run.

Imangi Studios, in conjunction with its licensing agency Dimensional Branding Group (DBG), announced several licensing partnerships in 2012 for Temple Run, including apparel with JEM Sportswear, digital comics exploring the back story of the game with Ape Entertainment, card and board games with Spin Master, arcade machines with Coastal Amusements and sleepwear with Komar.

“100 Million downloads is a significant milestone for any brand in the digital space, and is a reflection of the mass appeal of Temple Run and the deep connection fans have with this unique game,” said John Leonhardt, president of DBG.

In June 2012, Imangi and Disney Pixar launched Temple Run: Brave, bringing together the world of Disney Pixar’s animated fantasy adventure, “Brave,” and Temple Run. The game shot to the #1 slot in the App Store, and has been a top 10 App since its release.

Majesco a company famous for it's console games like Zumba Fitness and Cooking Mama titles is venturing into mobile games with 2 exciting titles. The company has had success with several Nintendo DS and PSP games and I hope it delivers the same quality with it's new additions to the Majesco library.

Venture through mysterious mazes, solve diabolical puzzles, employ ingenious devices and avoid dangerous traps all in the hopes of saving the fair princess who is being held prisoner by the fierce dragons that rule the land. The Week In Review, July 28 - August 3, 2012

via Wikipedia
Welcome to our Week In Review! Here we'll take a look at some of the great games and apps that embodied our theme this past week, and discuss what's to come in the week ahead.

You may have noticed a preponderance of space-themed games and apps this week; that's because we've all been preparing for next week's big cosmic event: NASA's newest Mars rover, Curiosity, will be touching down upon the Red Planet's surface! To commemorate, we've featured the following, to help you get into the mood:

Neil Burlock's Exoplanet Explorer Lite lets you range around our galaxy, discovering for yourself all the varied planets and stars we've uncovered over the years. For something closer to home, check out Bruno Oberdorfer's Pocket Planets Lite, which gives you details on our nearest celestial neighbors in our own solar system. Once Curiosity lands on Mars, you might want to follow its adventures with Mars Map, from ATLOGIS Geoinformatics oHG, which presents you with a zoomable look at the Martian surface. And finally, what exploration of our cosmos would be complete without the official NASA app itself?

When it comes to games, space is always a favorite theme to revisit. Some of the more recent releases you'll want to sample include Awem's Star Defender 3, a smartphone update to the kinds of classic shooters you'd have found in arcades of the past; and Astro Shark Demo, from unit9.apps, a game that tasks you with using the gravity of planets to slingshot your way around the galaxy in search of Laika, the missing Russian space dog.

What's coming up for Best Apps Market? Next week, we'll help you get out and have some fun in the sun while Summer's still with us, and celebrate Hot August Nights with our car-themed apps and games. And don't forget to install our widgets to keep up with our daily Editor's Top AppsTop Games, and Apps of the Day! Have a great weekend! -- Keoni C.

“The Pong Indie Developer Challenge presented an opportunity to introduce the talented work of independent developers to the Atari community, and their creativity was met with great enthusiasm,” said Giancarlo Mori, EVP of Product Development at Atari. “This enthusiasm, along with the success of our recent mobile releases likeCentipede®: Origins, is a further testament to the ability of our widely-recognized brands to engage both hardcore and mainstream audiences. We’ll continue this momentum with the forthcoming releases of qualifying winning Pong titles from this challenge.”

In the first phase of the contest, Atari received nearly 90 submissions from independent developers looking to remake Pong. After a comprehensive review, seven finalists were chosen for consideration by a celebrity judging panel made up of Nolan Bushnell, one of the original founders of Atari, Dave Castelnuovo of Bolt Creative (Pocket God), David Whatley of Critical Thought Games (geoDefense), and Mike Schramm of TUAW. In addition, the Atari community weighed in on the final ranking, with over 200,000 total votes logged for the various finalists. Ultimately, the winners announced today represent the top choices from Atari, the Atari community and the judging panel.
